"So come with me where dreams are born and time is never planned. Just think of happy things and your heart with fly on wings, forever, in Never Never land." - Peter Pan
In an early scene of The Acorn Tattoo, Jake and Claire attend a play of Peter Pan. This is the scene which features one of my favorite "costumes" of the book, and is also the scene where Jake's nickname for Claire - Claire Darling - is born.
Claire's look for the scene was inspired by the somewhat iconic image of Wendy in Disney's Peter Pan movie. It's worthwhile to note that Barrie himself gave little in the way of Claire's description - either in appearance or clothing. She is usually depicted with either blonde or light brown hair (my Claire has a strawberry blonde hair to again blend her with the Pan figure, who is likewise sparsely described in Barrie's original tale but generally seen with reddish or blond hair).
In his 2010 spring collection, J Menzel produced a beautiful pale blue, dreamy dress that I saw once and immediately thought of Claire/Wendy. It's ultra-feminine, very romantic, and formal enough to be worn to a theatre event while having a lingerie-ish element that makes it fitting for a nightgown from a bygone era. The dress itself was also worn by Kate Cassidy at the same years SAG awards.
